Program Introduction

Behind the performance of  "Dance in Silence"is the long-term "Hearing Impairment Co-Creation Project". This is not only an exploration of art aesthetics for the hearing impaired, but also an experimental field for achieving inclusive life through art.
It has been three years since ten hearing-impaired performers collaborated with twelve hearing crew members. We have established a close and trusting cooperative relationship for a long time, starting from each other's physiological differences and exploring how we face this common problem. world, and whether it is possible to transcend differences and truly realize an inclusive and diverse art and life circle.
Two years of knowing and feeling have become the core themes of artistic expression. We break away from the hearing-oriented creative method and find creative methods that are close to the perception mode of hearing-impaired artists. We hope that the unique aesthetic thinking of hearing-impaired art will be seen by more people. Through this co-creation project, we also hope to set an alternative model for inclusive and equal rights group life, both in the art world and in society.
"A long time ago, humans wanted to build a tower that could reach the sky. When the gods found out, they were very angry at humans' arrogance, so they disrupted humans' language so that they could no longer understand each other."
The story of the Tower of Babel brings out the barriers between people. Everyone with different ways of understanding explores the differences between each other. Is it possible that the distance between them can be shortened because of some resonance? Can we understand each other? How much effort and cost will it take?
The ten hearing-impaired performers who participated in this creation have no professional art training background, except for Lin Jinglan who learned dance by herself through hard work. Because the communication methods among the hearing-impaired and between the hearing-impaired and the hearing-impaired in the crew are quite complicated, there are natural sign language, written sign language, spoken language, lip reading, etc. The process of everyone overcoming communication barriers to cooperate, and how to accept each other and work together, seems like a myth has descended into the contemporary era, becoming the core theme of the performance.

The mental health of Taiwanese teenagers has been declining in recent years, and the younger generation of hearing-impaired individuals is facing greater difficulties in society. With the advancement of technology and text communication through mobile phones, life for the hearing-impaired has become more convenient than before, but the distance between people may not be eliminated. The integration of ethnic groups is still dependent on a heart that recognizes diversity and tolerates each other.
Adhering to the spirit of "cultural participation", this project aims to expand the audience of the art scene to hearing-impaired groups who have been less taken care of in the past, giving them the opportunity to become creators and participants of art activities.
We start from the "differences" between deaf/hearing people, see the commonality of "human beings" among the many differences, and think about mutual understanding and respect from this. Through co-creation of performances, hearing-impaired people try to express themselves in different ways, which will help their future career development. The developed hearing-impaired co-creation system has made this system professional. In the future, the energy of this team can be used for ordinary people in society, allowing the energy of art and culture to enter the lives of more hearing-impaired people.
This co-creation project has been developed since 2020. Hearing director Wang Heng and international hearing-impaired artist Lin Jinglan join forces with 9 hearing-impaired/deaf performers to transcend physical differences and discover the uniqueness of hearing-impaired/deaf people.
The perceptions and expressions of the hearing-impaired young people collectively describe how they perceive themselves in society and how they hope to be treated, thus finding a new momentum in life.
