Introduction

In different Taiwanese dialects, to mean nothing-at-all or none-sense , it literally spells in Chinese characters as "no shadow, no trace." The title of this art exhibition is a satire, because we believe that the truth often lies in the seemingly void.

Official histories of human societies have always been blurred, censored, edited, filtered and twisted. Once there is someone or something not politically incorrect, those who in power will always deny the confrontist and their deeds by taking all measures to eliminate them out of history.

For whatever once lived but with no trace left, it is equivalent to no longer being remembered. Moreover, the reality is reduced to nothingness, as if it never happened.

Although totalitarians with deliberate intentions may manipulate the written history to tamper with the collective memory, fortunately, photography defending core values plays the role as the witness to endorse the history and to consolidate memory indelible.

Both the late PAN Hsiao Hsia from Taiwan and GO Chung Ming, originally from Hong Kong, were photojournalists of integrity and good wills. They have always been concerned with human rights issues. They set feet in the dark corners and distant areas to photograph victimized and vulnerable people.

Traveling across the millennium, their series of works well blend photojournalism, storytelling and artistry altogether. Therefore, this exhibition is not only meant to submit the first-hand physical evidence of people and their contemporary, but also to encourage visitors to raise questions about the truth behind the scenes.

(KO Chung-Ming, 1981- )

Ko Chung Ming is a photojournalist born and raised in Hong Kong. In the 2019 Hong Kong Protests, he attempted to photograph the conflicts and emotions like what he has been doing in the past 20 years. However, Ko found it a bit ambitious due to his age and poor physique. Overwhelmed by post-exposure symptoms from tear gas, he took another path and recorded police brutality by taking portraits of the casualties. "Wounds of Hong Kong" won the Sony World Press Photography 2020 Documentary - Professional competition.

Ko migrated to Taiwan in 2021 and began to record the political exiles and diaspora from Hong Kong. "Beyond the Revolution of Out Times," held in Taipei in April 2022, was his first solo exhibition in Taiwan. Afterward, he collaborated with art director LEE Tian-jue. Aggregated with "Wounds of Hong Kong" and "The Chronic Wounds of Hong Kong," the Hong Kong Protest Trilogy was curated into a series of art installations. "REST" was held in Taichung in late 2022. "The Chronic Wounds of Hong Kong" won Excellent Journalism Awards 2021, Photo Story Section.

On regular days, Ko focuses on poverty, homelessness, and ethnic minorities. His work "Cent Maison——Living Environment of the Poor in Hong Kong" won the WYNG Masters Award 2012. Ko has become a volunteer photographer for Oxfam Hong Kong since 2016. He joined Oxfam's humanitarian program in Rohingya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, and other countries. His works on homelessness over a decade resulted in the solo exhibition "Exiled," held in May 2021 in Hong Kong as a farewell to his home city.
